We started the day in the Antalya Antiquites Museum. I have previously commented on Asia Minor being the crossroads of civilization and history. This museum demonstrates that. Every culture that made Anatolia their home is represented here. We only had a couple of hours to see it but we could have spent a couple of days. This is a must see! They have everything from the ancient neolithic cultures to the Hittites, down through Greeks and Romans to the Ottomans.
We love this photo of the young art student drawing one of the statue fragments--to us it seems like a meeting of the ancient and modern, something that has been a theme of this entire trip. Living up close and very personal with antiquities is not something we are accustomed to in the US.
We left Antalya for a bus ride to Fethiye, which is a seaport on the Mediterranean coast, where we went aboard our home for the next five days. The boat is called a gulet. It has sails but we used the motor the entire time. It has six cabins which are quite "cozy". All of us will know each other very well before this phase of the trip is finished. Our group had four of these boats, all owned by the same family. Ours is named the Surhat Bey, named after the owner's son Surhat.
